Phill's Bhutan Trek for Mental Health

Story

Hi,

From the 8th-19th October, 2015, I'll be embarking on the Black Dog 'Trek to Happiness' through Inspired Adventures to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute. This involves travel to and from the Himalayan wilderness of Bhutan and a week of hiking through the Himalayas (Wooohhooo!!!).

The reason I have become involved is that I feel that Mental Health is a highly misunderstood, undervalued and underappreciated area of Holistic Health. I believe that good Mental Health is not just the absence of mental Illness (In the same way that good Physical Health is not just the absence of physical illness) but an ongoing and ever changing aspect of Health that needs to be individually worked on and strengthened throughout life. I am hoping, through this adventure, to not only help to enrich and assist those living with mental Illnesses (through support of the brilliant work the Black Dog Institute does) but to also discover better and different ways to enrich my own Mental Health (through observing and immersing myself into the Bhutanese way of life).

Having seen promising and positive young lives very close to me derailed and even ended pre-maturely through suicides, psychotic episodes and mental weariness arising from Mental Health Issues I feel very strongly about the aims of the Black Dog Institute. However as I said earlier I feel that Mental Health runs much deeper than just the absence or presence of diagnosed Mental Health Issues, Mental Health is an area of well-being which everyone (and I do mean everyone) would benefit from taking the time to perform pro-active, positive and meaningful steps to boost and increase their own Mental Health. The good news is that activities which will boost your Mental Health are often the most rewarding and enjoyable.

I've been lucky enough over the past year to discover the amazing benefits of completing Ultra-Marathons and the boost this has given my overall Health and Well-being (including mental resilience, strength and confidence; not to mention travelling and exploring stunning areas of the world and meeting like-minded friends) however it can be as simple as; noting 3 things each day that made you smile to help build your appreciation, performing a kind act for someone else or showing gratitude to others, anything that makes you smile genuinely is an act boosting your Mental well-being.

Each year, Black Dog Institute aims to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of depression and Bipolar Disorder and improve the lives of those affected by these mood disorders. Please help me in my cause by donating through my page.

If you are interested in helping in ways other than monetary donations then please contact me at phill.dernee@gmail.com.

Keep smiling, Phill  cheeky

Black Dog Institute

Black Dog Institute

One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year.

Mental illness can be overwhelming, crippling and isolating.

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder and suicide.
We are the only mental health facility in Australia that combines clinical services, high quality translational research and education programs. We work to empower communities and help the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The Black Dog Institute has 4 important goals:
to diagnose mental illness accurately and early,
treat them using innovative, effective and accessible strategies,
prevent their onset by understanding why and who they affect
to reduce the overall impact of mental illness and save lives.

Black Dog Institute’s vision is for a mentally healthier world.
A world where the onset of depression and suicide can be prevented and treated. With your help we can make this vision a reality.
